Maxwell Trevelyan by AldreaAlien

I am about halfway through my second go at Dragon Age: Inquisition with Maxwell Trevelyan. And, despite it being a touch harder, allegedly, than my previous run, I can't stop myself from thinking a ton of backstory info on him.

To date, he...

  • Is in his mid-twenties. Around the 26/27 range.
  • Is the third child of four (having two sisters & one brother). Closest to his younger sister (a mage). Has a warm relationship with his brother. The one with his older sis, on the other hand, is a bit strained.
  • Has a rocky relationship with his mother who is obsessed with marrying him off to the "right girl" in the sole goal of more grandchildren. Yelling is generally involved when they're left together for long, with their last argument ending with him mockingly suggesting she "might as well put him out to stud". On the other hand, his relationship with his father is full of him mediating for mother and son.
  • Was arranged to marry a young noblewoman from a prestigious Nevarran house at a young age. Maxwell managed to convince not only the girl in question, but also her family, that a close cousin (who shall now be known as Derek) would be a better match than he. The pair have been happily married for almost a decade, much to Maxwell's mother's dismay.
  • Is his grandmother's (Trevelyan side) favourite. She's a protective woman who may, or may not, be behind the fleeing of several prospective boyfriends. For this reason, his is wary of letting people he likes meet "Nana". She also keeps trying to set him up with "nice boys" she's heard of; he takes a dim view of this.
  • Had a crush on the stable master's son (Dennis) as a boy. They ended up losing touch when Dennis joined the templar order and Max became a cleric.
  • Has a scar hidden under his hair on the left side. This was gained at the age of eight via a giant spider attack whilst traversing the forest with his younger sister.
  • Gained the scar on his temple when he was nine and trying to defend his younger sister from mercenaries (that's when her talents surfaced).
  • Got the scar on his nose at the age of twelve, after being thrown from his horse, tumbling down a bank and right into a bush.
  • Has a close, brother-like relationship with a distant templar cousin. A man who is scarily willing to beat up those who disrespect family.
  • Had a few flings and one serious relationship in his teens. The relationship fizzled when the other guy cheated on him with some girl. There is an arrow-sized hole in a door in the Ostwick Chantry that can attest to his feelings on the matter. Last he knows, the man wound up on a ship bound for Ferelden, then Rivain. Maxwell suspects his cousin is responsible, cousin doesn't deny but also won't confirm.
  • Is a relatively quiet lover.
  • Is a devout Andrastrian. He doubts at times, but always finds his way back.
  • Was a lay-brother for some time prior to taking his vows and becoming, in his words, "just another cleric". He took his vows six years before the start of Inquisition's events. As is no doubt expected, he is well-versed in the Chant.
  • Is afraid of the dark, more specifically being trapped in the dark.
  • Gets easily bored with theatrical works. Hence the rabbits turning up at a certain Antivan play.
  • Loves to socialise and dance. Sing, too. And his voice gets a slightly deeper tone when he does.
  • Shares his brother's talent for archery. Prior to the events at the Conclave, the bow he carried was given to him by his brother.
  • Will do whatever it takes to protect those he loves. In this vein, he readily used his family's connections to send an abusive templar packing from the Ostwick Circle and spent the majority of the Mage-Templar war trying to track down his sister just to keep her safe.
  • Was at the Conclave in part to do his father's bidding, but also to track down leads on his sister and bring her safely home (he did not become aware that she was also at the Conclave until much later).
  • Gained the scar over his left eye thanks to a frightened mage and a lucky swing with their staff whilst he was helping restore order in the Ostwick Circle.
  • Could make his ex-boyfriend blush just by humming.
  • Becomes an utter dork around cute guys.

For a long time, I seriously had no idea what the hell I was going to do with all that. I was just after my "Herald" trophy (now the "Nightmare" one), but it seems this guy has swiped "fav DA:I PC" from my Lavellan character... and I picked her name, her personality, her backstory... everything, months before the game came out. He just flings all that aside like it's nothing.

Since going through my second playthrough with him, he's garnered quite a few stories...

They were underground and it was dark, gloomy at best, their path haphazardly lit by torches and the occasional conjured flame of Dorian's. That made this place bad enough for Maxwell. The mark, with its ever-present glow, had made bearing such fears a little easier. Yet, this oppressing darkness prickled the back of his neck, the crushing weight of the rock above always at the forefront of his mind.
Now, they'd come to what appeared to be a great chasm, their way forward little more than a bridge over nothing. Nevertheless, he couldn't resist peering over the edge, his chest tightening at the sight. The great gaping hole seemed to go on forever. But they'd already travelled far beneath t

Maxwell sat in Skyhold's chapel. Alone. Pensive. It'd been months since he'd prayed. The business with the Breach and stopping Corypheus made it all seem secondary—not to mention the dent in his pride after having been so certain of being chosen by Andraste. Even now, with things relatively quiet, he couldn't bring himself to think of the Chant, much less speak the words.
Instead, his mind buzzed, not with the almost unintelligible whispers of voices long since dead. No, his thoughts were turned to finding a solution to his problem, the gossip his closeness with Dorian had summoned up, without making things worse. He couldn't control what the people knew any more than he could stop what they said. In Ostwick, his older siblings

There were times when Maxwell regretted not becoming a templar. As he looked up at the mighty structure before him, that old regret flared to life. The Circle tower looked much like any other fortified building; strong, imposing and, above all, guarded. And it was these armoured men who watched as he neared the gates. Even those in Chantry garb weren't absolved of speculation.
He'd been here before, delivering this or that for the Chantry mothers—mostly books and scrolls—and surreptitiously checking in on his sister. Evelyn had chewed him out the last time, having no doubt made the connection between his last excursion and the removal of the man who'd been responsible for several bruises.
We're not me

Although, if you want to see some clips of him in action, I've got a playlist going on youtube of his dorky ass dorking about Thedas. And yes, he's romancing Dorian. Don't act like you weren't expecting that.

It's sort of sad that all my favourite playthroughs have turned out to be human, not that I had a choice in DA2, but in Origins? It became Daylen Amell by a wide margin. At least he's not another mage.
